Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Immigration attorney Nayef Mubarak with Mubarak Law in Downtown Orlando reminds us that October is breast cancer awareness month and that it is also domestic violence awareness month. In this regard, he tells us about a client, a victim of domestic violence, who went through extreme cruelty and who just got her VAWA case approved. Many people believe VAWA offers options only to female victims, but this is not true. VAWA, the Violence Against Women's Act, covers anybody who is married to a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident and that is a victim of domestic violence. VAWA allows domestic violence victims to do a self-petition. Abusers frequently manipulate the immigrant victim with fear about their status. Among the places in Orlando providing services to victims of domestic violence are the Harbor House of Central Florida.
